I am an Associate Professor in Psychology at Aalborg University, focusing particular on social and personality psychology. My research explores psychological phenomena such as subjectivity and mental health and their relations to the complex contexts and environments that we inhabit - societies, cultures, history and so on. I am particularly interested in developing ecological, ecosocial and 'externalist' perspectives on mental health problems, and I have been exploring this from both theoretical and empirical angles for a number of years. My research is predominantly qualitative.

I am currently engaged in two research projects:

PLACES: Psychopathology in Ecosocial Niches.

This project uses qualitative methods to explore how people living with either ADHD or anxiety experience their social, cultural and spatial contexts. Under this project I am particularly focused on anxiety, and I am currently exploring both lived experiences of anxiety and the broader scientific and intellectual history of anxiety.

AIM: Can AI Solve the Mental Health Crisis? Exploring Governance, Explainability and Trust.

In the last few years, artificial intelligence has rapidly entered the field of mental health, spurred on by what is called the global mental health crisis, defined by the high prevalence of mental health problems and lack of treatment access. In response to these challenges, academic researchers and private companies are increasingly developing generative AI for mental health, hoping that AI can revolutionize psychiatry and help solve the mental health crisis. However, the development and deployment of these technologies within psychological and psychiatric practices involves both technical, ethical and social challenges and pressing questions. In AIM, my research team and I use qualitative methods to map and analyze what happens, when AI is deployed to solve the 'mental health crisis', focusing especially on diagnostic and therapeutic technologies.
